Ecology and CALM - Memorial Garden for the late Carol Young

In 2001 a group of volunteers from the Centre worked with the Harlow Conservation Volunteers (HCV)  to turn a stretch of wasteland behind the CALM Centre into a beautiful wildlife garden. Our aim was to commemorate one of the founders of the Centre  by creating a self-sustaining environment supporting a range of wildlife which would also be an interesting place for people to sit and relax.

The HCV worked with us over one weekend removing turf, erecting trellis, placing logs and creating havens for insects and birds. The plants were carefully chosen to ensure year round interest and cover.

We succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. The rubbish skips are now camouflaged by trellis which has roses and honeysuckle cascading over and through it. The rowan tree is thriving and, throughout the year there is always something to look at. The succession of snowdrops, aquilegia, lavender and jasmine are just some of the many plants in our garden.

A weekend of laughter, hard work and inspiration gave us a garden which can be enjoyed by all the community thanks to a grant from the Elizabeth & Reuben Foundation as well as the hard work of the  Harlow Conservation Volunteers and CALM Centre volunteers..

CALM Choir

One of our volunteers enjoys singing and had been taking lessons. She suggested that other CALM volunteers would enjoy being part of a choir and set about recruiting members and a voice coach. The choir has now been meeting fortnightly since July 2006 and has been very popular. No excuse for out-of-tune singing in the shower now!

PANDORA Group

This group for women over 65 meets on the first Wednesday of every month except January and August. They have been meeting at the centre to socialise and listen to invited speakers for nearly as many years as the centre has been in existence.  This friendly, exuberant group always make new members feel very welcome.
